Demonstrations without recent precedents started in Cuba on 11 July with people chanting “freedom!” and “down with the dictatorship”, as the country goes through the worst economic crisis in 30 years, a situation aggravated by the Covid-19 pandemic.

The protests, widely shared on social media, started spontaneously in the early hours of Sunday. Such gatherings against the government of Miguel Díaz Canel are very rare in a country controlled by the Communist party. The President called his supporters to take the streets and confront the protesters.

“Down with the dictatorship”, “Go away” and “Country and life!” were some of the chants heard by several thousands who took the streets in cities across the island. “Freedom!”, sang others in the emblematic Malecón of La Habana.

Images were seen as well of groups of people breaking glasses of businesses and stealing food. Many in Cuba have been complaining about the difficult economic crisis and the lack of access to food.

Also the insufficient reaction of the authorities to the Covid-19 health crisis and the saturation of hospitals has brought Cubans to added suffering.

Evangelicals call to prayer

Inside and outside Cuba, evangelical leaders have called to prayer for the island.

“Brothers and sisters, pray for Cuba, the people are on the streets, asking for freedom, the situation is chaotic and very agitated”, said a message shared by Moisés de Prada, the leader of Assemblies of God in Cuba. “Everything points to the fact that this is going to get more complicated. People are in the streets in every province now, and there are clashes with the riot police. I urge you to pray that God takes control and prevents a bloodbath”.

The leader of the Pentecostal denomination in Cuba adds that “Cubans could no longer bear the repression. The humanitarian crisis is deep. There is no food, there is a severe health crisis. Many are dying, there are not enough vaccines: they are sold to Venezuela and Iran while Cubans die without being vaccinated. Hospitals are on the verge of collapse and doctors are tired. Cubans are in the streets of all the country, I think this is irreversible. Pray for us”.

Manifestaciones sin precedentes recientes comenzaron en Cuba el 11 de julio con personas coreando "¡libertad!" y “abajo la dictadura”, mientras el país atraviesa la peor crisis económica en 30 años, situación agravada por la pandemia de Covid-19.

Las protestas, ampliamente compartidas en las redes sociales, comenzaron espontáneamente en la madrugada del domingo. Éste tipo de reuniones contra el gobierno de Miguel Díaz Canel son muy raras en un país controlado por el Partido Comunista. El presidente llamó a sus seguidores a tomar las calles y enfrentarse a los manifestantes.

"Abajo la dictadura", "¡Vete" y "Patria y vida!" fueron algunos de los cánticos que escucharon varios miles de personas que tomaron las calles de las ciudades de la isla. “¡Libertad!”, Cantaron otros en el emblemático Malecón de La Habana.

También se vieron imágenes de grupos de personas rompiendo vasos de negocios y robando comida. Muchos en Cuba se han quejado de la difícil crisis económica y la falta de acceso a los alimentos.

También la insuficiente reacción de las autoridades a la crisis de salud del Covid-19 y la saturación de los hospitales ha llevado a los cubanos a un sufrimiento adicional.

Los evangélicos llaman a la oración

Dentro y fuera de Cuba, los líderes evangélicos han llamado a la oración por la isla.

“Hermanos y hermanas, oren por Cuba, la gente está en las calles pidiendo libertad, la situación es caótica y muy agitada”, decía un mensaje compartido por Moisés de Prada, líder de Asambleas de Dios en Cuba. “Todo apunta a que ésto se va a complicar más. Ahora hay gente en las calles de todas las provincias y hay enfrentamientos con la policía antidisturbios. Les insto a orar para que Dios tome el control y evite un baño de sangre ”.

El líder de la denominación pentecostal en Cuba agrega que “los cubanos ya no pudieron soportar la represión. La crisis humanitaria es profunda. No hay comida, hay una grave crisis de salud. Muchos están muriendo, no hay suficientes vacunas: se venden a Venezuela e Irán mientras los cubanos mueren sin ser vacunados. Los hospitales están al borde del colapso y los médicos están cansados. Los cubanos están en las calles de todo el país, creo que ésto es irreversible. Ruega por nosotros".
