The body of Franciscan Friar Mychal Judge (age 68) NYFD Chaplain is carried from the destruction of the World Trade Center, 20 years ago- September 11, 2001. He was struck and killed by falling debris as he was administering "Last Rites" to victims. In this now famous picture, he was carried into nearby St. Paul's Chapel and laid upon the altar. (Only by divine intervention, was the Chapel spared. It is marked as "The Little Chapel that stood" while all else around was destroyed." In humble honor and respect to his years of service to the NYFD, Father Mychal is listed as "Victim # 0001".
We pray to never forget the horrific cowardice act of terrorism inflicted upon our country 20 years ago. More importantly- we pray never forget the lives of the nearly 2800 people who died, including 343 NYFD firefighters and 71 law enforcement personnel. (We remember also the 41 fatalities of Flight 93 which crashed in Pennsylvania, as everyday passengers fought back and the 125 who died at the Pentagon.) We also remember the brave men and women who labored for months and months in the recovery operation. ( My memory honors the 7 officers from my own Department who responded that very night and stayed for three days. I can still recall their haunting remark: "So many shoes".)
During the Quinquennial Synod of The Old Catholic Churches International in August 2019, a unanimous acclamation declared Father Mychal Judge a Saint of The Church- "The Saint of 9/11" for his unwavering faith, practice of his Holy Office in extreme adversity with courage and his Ministry of Presence, even to the sacrifice of, and indifference to, his own life. Christ proclaims, " greater love has no man than this, to lay down his own life." John 15:13
